Some 15 years ago I visited my friend Rossco at lake in northern Ontario.
What I learn about the lake was that it is about 7 miles long and maybe 2.5 miles wide with many inlets and bays to explore.
Situated almost in the centre of the lake is an island that rises 38 feet above the water and as legend has it contains an abundance of fish life around it, with pickerel and bass reported to be this big…….
No matter where you go on the lake you can't help but pass by this place we call High Rock.
It didn't take long before we were invited to the rock to meet the folks that lived there.
When you first set foot on the island you realize that this is a special place filled with great joy and honest friendship. From the Flowers on the dock to the multicolored muskoka chairs to the quacking duck for a phone you knew someone had left her mark on this little bit of heaven.
With her welcoming smile and unmistakable laugh we soon realized why this place was as special as it was.
Vera had a way to make you feel like you were part of family with her warm hospitality and delicious cooking. Dropping in unannounced was allowed and encouraged and often led to cocktails on the deck followed by dinner and much laughter into the nite.
That special bond between Vera and Fred over their 47 years of marriage became clear when you participated in some of the Projects Fred dreamed up.
One project involved the installation of the new septic tank. Imagine waking up on a sunny Saturday morning and seeing a 1000 gallon plastic septic tank being towed down the lake to the island. Once out to the island, the tank had to be hoisted to the top of the rock, up that38 feet. With Vera in the boat and the rest of us at the top, the hoisting seemed to be working well until about 5 feet from the top when you guessed it the rope snapped.
The tank tumbled to the lake below and the wind began to push it to the neighboring island.
After some laughing we ran to the dock only to find the boat drifting out in the same wind. The famous Cathers Knot did not hold. After more laughing and a short swim all was recovered. We still don't know who tied that knot. Vera and Fred never sorted that one out.
The Cathers Knot has been used many times on docks, inflatable floating slides and rafts and evens logs. All have slipped their bonds but most have made it safely back to the rock. I figure this is how Fred and Vera became friends with most of the people on the lake.
Putting up with Fred and his projects was one thing, the kids, another.
Who can forget The Wedding? Details of this event are legendary and will live on in stories for years. Vera's support and encouragement made this weekend memorable.
In recent times, one thing became paramount in Vera's world. She was fiercely proud of her Grandchildren and continually talked with us about them. The island, at times resembled a daycare. A Bunkie was added and a beach installed. Families grew and many memories were made. I know she loved this.
I'm honored to be here today to share my stories with you. We all have memories we will cherish about this special lady. I know I will smile when I pass by High Rock on my quest for that elusive Pickerel. She will be missed but never forgotten.
