I knew Eugene for many years while stationed in London, Ontario with the CPR. We spoke frequently and I was always impressed by this man as a unique story teller. A very intelligent man and an avid railway fan to say the least. I made many visits to his residence for long talks and he in turn joined our family for Christmas dinner on a few occasions. He was a good and kind man. May he rest in peace.

Our condolences to Eugene's family on your loss. Eugene was a regular caller (mostly by phone but sometimes in person) to The London Free Press newsroom. He always addressed us congenially by our first and last names – I think he'd memorized each of our phone extensions and 'news beats' – and we sometimes worried a bit when we hadn't heard from him for a while. The depth of his reading and the breadth of his knowledge were evident in every conversation. He always spoke of railways and his home city of Montreal (a smattering of French in each call), and it was clear that he dearly loved connecting with people. Condolences again, and may he rest well. -- Deb Van Brenk

Eugene was an avid London Free Press reader. In our newsroom, if you had a big front-page story, it was a highlight to get a call from Eugene -- reciting the headline and asking all about the story. We sincerely loved hearing from him. I'm fascinated to hear he was an elite youth hockey player and musician, he never told me that in all our conversations. RIP and condolences to his family. -- Patrick Maloney

Oh no. This is so sad. I knew Gene in high school in TMR and he was the nicest fellow and a gentleman.
Always in good humour, he was positive, fun and charming.
Many Junior B hockey games were so exciting with Gene in goal. I believe Paul Harwood also played with him.
Gene was one of the good guys and I so regret his death at a still young age.
