I am so sorry to find this out. I coached with Martin in the LMBHA a few years back. Caleb and Eric were my fav kids, along with my son Garrison. A memory I will never forget.
I remember Martin and I bantering in the dressing room and him talking about the steelers....He always talked about the Steelers.
I will cherish those short times I got to share with him. We got along very well behind the bench and I even brought Garrison to watch caleb a couple times play hockey.
Words cannot desciibe how sorry I am for the family.
RIP Martin. Thank-you for the memories..

I feel fortunate to have gotten to know Martin over the last few years through a couple of small projects we were working on with MTO. A highlight was the time he visited us at Waterloo and took a student and I on a tour of bridge projects in the region. Martin always had a practical “get it done” attitude in our interactions, which I appreciated a great deal, and he was always very generous with his time and words of moral support for our research efforts. He was clearly very bright and knowledgeable of all things to do with bridges, and had a great sense of humour. I am heartbroken by this news for both Martin and his family.

To Martin’s family and friends. I cannot find any words to describe how I feel or could ever feel about you loss.
I had the privilege and pleasure of working with Martin. Martin would call me every once and a while to talk and probably vent about some issues he was facing representing our engineering group. Conversations could last well over an hour. Martin was a great strategist, very intelligent, and an excellent engineer. He always had the whole story with facts and information to backup his position. Martin was one of the most tenacious and authentic people I know. His stance on tough issues was always genuine and always under the umbrella of “do the right thing”.
When Martin would believe in something he was stubborn but would always consider a good argument. Having married into a Dutch family with lots of Dutch heritage the word stubborn is not a word it is a culture.
I thank you Martin for being stubborn, a great strategist, genuine, authentic, tenacious, and a champion for engineers.
I will miss our conversations.

On behalf of the MTO Foundations, I extend our deepest condolences on the passing of Martin. Our office enjoyed working with Martin on numerous projects and committees. Martin always acknowledged Foundations and there was always comfort knowing that Martin would be there to support Foundation Engineering initiatives.
On a personal note, Martin and I would spend hours talking about hockey. His passion derived from his pride for son Caleb. Always looking to do the right thing for Caleb's development, Martin was always gracious, respectful and courteous in our conversations.
We also had another common interest - PEGO. Again, in the best of interest of others, Martin and I talked about the significance and importance of representing the membership.
I frequently praised Martin for his strength and for his disposition. Martin never hesitated to express his opinion and stood up for his beliefs. He was a man of character, principle and integrity.
Martin will be missed but his legacy will live on. I will forever hold on to the memories of my colleague and my friend.

Dear Lisa, Caleb, Ethan and sweet Avery,
We are so very sorry for your loss. Martin was a wonderful husband and father. We would watch him from across the street looking after his family with such care and love. He would be building a deck, finishing a garden, starting a fire for a backyard gathering or hooking up the trailer for a camping trip. Everything he did was for his family and you could tell he loved it!! The girls have really enjoyed playing together over the years and Martin always handled them with just the right touch. I was always amazed too how he could get Caleb and Ethan to wash the cars, cut the lawn and fix the garden all in the same weekend. Martin obviously had a magic touch with his kids. Ethan, Caleb, Avery and Lisa you all were so loved by a very special man!
With our deepest sympathy,

Dear Martin's family
I worked with Martin on several projects through MTO. He was brilliant, passionate and always defending/pursuing what was right. Our experiences working together lead to a trust in being able to "say what you are thinking" with confidence that it would be shared and thought through appropriately. We had many lengthy phone conversations and they always turned to family and what our families are up too. He always giggled when he told his stories. I am so sorry for your loss and please accept my thoughts and prayers for you and Martin who left too soon.
