Obituary of Joan Ormont

Marian Joan Connor Ormont passed away peacefully in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania on April 16, 2018 at the age of 92.  A much beloved mother and grandmother, she is survived by her children, Marian Amanda Ormont of Pennsylvania and Michael Llewellyn Ormont of New Hampshire, her grandchildren Alexandra, Emily, Connor, Alden and Henry, and by her brother, Daniel Henry Connor, of Gaithersburg, Maryland.  She was predeceased by her loving husband, Dr. Louis Robert Ormont (d.2008).

Born and raised in Aylmer, Ontario, Joan Ormont attended Queens University and later received her MA in English Literature at the Catholic University in Washington DC.  As a young adult, she was both an avid writer and director, producing plays at the Brattle Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts.  She later moved to New York City where she met and married Dr. Ormont.  She was dedicated to lifelong learning, and earned a Ph. D. in Psychoanalysis while raising her children.   For over 35 years, she had a thriving psychoanalytic practice and was an accomplished educator on the faculty of The Union Institute for Psychoanalytic Studies, now Union Institute and University.  She taught group therapy courses for the Center for Group Studies in Manhattan and was a supervisor for other psychotherapists.  Her interests were many and varied, and included travel, reading, poetry and theater.

Joan’s sense of humor, compassion and generosity added much richness to the lives of all who were fortunate enough to know her.  Her enlightened view of the world and her ability to understand others were but two examples of her much admired insight.  She was a strong role model, inspiring all her students to pursue academic excellence and all who knew her to aspire to a life well-lived.  She will be deeply missed by her family and many friends.

A funeral service will be held at St. Paul’s United Church, Aylmer on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at 1:00 pm. Interment, Aylmer Cemetery.  Share memories or condolences at kebbelfuneralhome.com
