I'm so saddened to hear about the passing of Mike. One of my first memories of Aylmer (1969) was a wonderful visit to your orchard, and through the years Mike was active in our church (Trinity) and of course our Legion. I last saw him at my father's funeral and was very touched to see him there. He often went the extra mile to include my father in Legion events as Dad's (Bob Mills') health failed. So sorry to hear about your loss.

Our condolences to the Rokeby Family. Hopefully Michael's positive contributions to the apple industry and community will soften the shock of departing. Michael was there many years ago being one of my Dad's first employers when our family first came to Canada! Dad and Michael are side by side in Norm Pierce's photo. Our apple history continued from that and it was in 1984 or so that Michael showed me the political side of the industry. Michael was actively involved in the Ontario Apple Marketing Commission and the Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers' Association. He mentored me into both of the organizations. Michael was also a tireless promoter of apples - starting at farm level and taking it to the Aylmer Fair, London Fair, London Farm Show and the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto. I am sure there are other areas where he promoted Ontario Apples, especially when he was travelling. I especially enjoyed the one trip to BC and Washington to see orchards and attend the International Dwarf Fruit Tree Convention - Michael organized the trip that was enjoyed by all! We will miss Michael and his zest for life and Ontario Apples - The Rokeby family should be very proud of what Michael accomplished. He has left a positive life and legacy for all of us and his beloved apple industry. Best to all of you in these trying times The Van den Borre Family

Hi Patty - I wish I was better with words so I could give you something better right now, but I'm not so I can't. I guess I'll just fumble through this as best I can.
I've been thinking all day again about Uncle Mike and what a huge presence he's been in our family and how much he meant to us.
When we were kids and we'd head off to Canada in the summer, every single time it was a bee-line straight to your house. I always liked that because it was just the most fun there. And then all these years later, when I started bringing Anne with me, it was still a bee-line straight to Uncle Mike's. It just never felt like we were quite in Canada yet until we saw him.
Years and years ago, my mom had to travel up there by herself to bury one of her parents, and it was your dad who met her and took care of her while she was there. She told me this just a few months ago, and said she doesn't know what she'd have done without him being there for her.
He was in the car with me when I drove home from the hospital the night my dad died, and we got out and were walking to the house under a cold really clear sky with gobs of stars and he looked up and said there's a new star up there tonight, and I said maybe so, and he said - it's as good a theory as any. And to this day I never ever look up at the stars without thinking of what he said. And I believe he may have had something there..
He was like that- he could talk about a complex thing like that and just apply some sense to things.
He just seemed, to me anyway, kind of the center of my Canadian family. The king-pin or something. His place is just where we'd naturally go first and get the scoop on who, when, where and how.
I know that we're going to miss him. And I know we're sad and that our hearts hurt. But I can't help but notice that the memories I have of him are bringing joy to me at the same time. I think I'm lucky, we're all lucky, to have had him in our lives and to have been influenced by him. I admired him all my life, and I do still, and I personally think it was a gift having him here.
And as luck would have it, I got to visit with him just last week on the phone. We had a great time as always, and he talked about his trip you all went on recently, and about a book he was reading, and about the orchard, and moving, and lots of other stuff. And as always it brightened up my day just having him call and talk. You can probably imagine how glad I am he made that call - it's going to stay with me for a long time.
So, please know that down here, we're thinking about all of you and hope you find some comfort and peace soon. And don't forget to look up at that night sky once in a while. It can't hurt, and it helps me sometimes. We'll keep in touch -RFR

Linda & family. Thoughts and memories are with you at this difficult time. I put a memory on Bert’s Facebook page, but there is more. He commandeered me into promoting the Apple Industry with him at ‘Ag In The Class’ at the Aylmer Curling Rink for a couple of years. I learned a lot about the man and the commodity that was near and dear to his heart. Five apple petals on a blossom and later, five seed pockets inside the mature apple. At a Fruit Growers’ meeting, he was talking about Crop Insurance and hail in the orchard and said “there is only one farm in this room that has never had a claim” and he pointed to the Pearces. That year, hail hit us. He volunteered me to sit on the board of Farm Labour and I would get paid! I was at his farm as he was handing out apples to customers and he handed me one saying “have an apple” and then realized who I was. He was a bit tongue tied for a minute and said “you grow these; have one anyway!” He was a master of words and hospitality anytime. Mike was one of a kind. Liz

Linda and family, We are truly sad to hear of the recent passing of Mike. He was such a great man who gave everything he had to anyone he knew. His heart was pure gold. We are going to miss him but he will never be forgotten. Thank you to you and your family for the many years you contributed to the local scouting groups. I will cherish the memories of the golf cart rides around the orchard with Mike and never being allowed to leave empty handed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you always. Take care.... 1950s: Mom, dad and 3 little girls drive along a country road, to happen upon the Rokeby apple orchard and find "just the right apples" for our Dutch apple pies. We've been returning there every year from London, for over 50 years, to pick Blenheim Orange Pippins, otherwise not easily found. This year, as we were taking apples down from the last of only 3 of these trees, we were thinking of Michael in hospital. We will miss those personal tours of the orchard with Michael, when he would drive the rows, name the varieties, describe their origins, educate us on the growth and management of apple trees. We will soon likely have to choose a new variety for those Dutch apple pies, but that won't be too difficult, as Michael left us with some good recommendations, not just a few weeks ago. We know that Michael Rokeby had a strong presence in the community of Aylmer and I am sure he will be missed. Our condolences go out to Linda Rokeby and family. Christine, Johanna and Margaret Voorhaar, London, Ontario.
