So sorry to hear of Marion's passing. My Dad, Herb Stevens was the Principal at EEHS when she worked in the office and I believe he encouraged her to pursue her education to qualify her to teach. I would say hello when I would visit Mrs. Jakob in the Nursing Home and she was always so glad to see me. Dad died in 2004 at the age of 90. So sorry for your loss, Carol Leetham

She was a kind and thoughtful aunt who added so much to our lives; fun and giggles, travel, letters, cards, phone calls and gifts galore, support, love and always a very warm welcome. I miss her and always will, but am comforted to know that she is on her way to be with her loved ones who have gone before.

Thoughts from Jim Thompson, Marion Ruth`s Nephew
Brisbane, Australia
I regret that I cannot be present with my family today but my thoughts are certainly with all of you.
Just over 3 weeks ago, on Aunt Marion Ruth's birthday, I was very fortunate to reach her on the telephone for a warm but fairly brief conversation. I believe her moments of pleasure were rare in recent times. A visit from Uncle Ernest and EJay a couple of days earlier had been a highlight.
Mark's efforts in the past few years have been commendable and we all owe you our sincere thanks.
With you I mourn Aunt Bussie's passing and believe her to be in a better place today.

Thoughts from Margie Lou Thompson, Marion Ruth`s Niece
Napier, New Zealand
Marion Ruth, known to loved ones as Bussie, was my one-of-a-kind aunt and Godmother too. Our family grew up with her being a prominent member, be it weekly phone calls during high discount times, Christmases, March Break school holidays, summer visits to our home, or visits to her on our Grandparents' farm. Aunt Bussie loved her stays with our Thompson family of eight, as my mother, Betty, catered to her needs, cooking extra special meals and generally making Marion Ruth very comfortable and content. Bussie loved to eat well, nearly scraping the pattern off of the plate! She also enjoyed being silly, laughing, singing, quoting poetry, crossword puzzles, talking about old times good and bad, Lawrence Welk shows, language, travel, speaking to strangers and especially writing a comprehensive daily diary for nearly 80 years. Her interest in genealogy tempted her to travel to the British Isles, for the first of many of her trips there, in 1973. Lucky for me I was of the right age to be her traveling companion and what a trip it was! Bussie most generously sponsored my trip with her on the luxury ocean liner, the Queen Elizabeth the Second, from New York City to Southampton and back again. Then we had a busy three weeks traveling England, Scotland and Wales; one week spent with her good friend and Kings College Professor, Alice Coleman, in London then two weeks on a formal bus tour. She easily made many friends both on our cruise and the tour. Subsequently she returned several times to the UK, to do further family history research and to enjoy the sites. On one trip she took along Barbie Lynn, my sister, and then Bob, my brother, on another. I know we three could tell many amusing Bussie stories of our time with her and that we all were grateful to her. She was both generous and kind to take us abroad, providing us with a wonderful opportunity and life-long memories. Closer to home, in the late sixties, Bussie took me to Kincardine for a week-long summer holiday, on many beach days to Port Bruce or Port Burwell, on a train trip with Ruby Foo to the CNE among many other day trips. In latter years she would treat me and Paula and Max to entertaining lunches, often at the Pinecroft restaurant.
Marion Ruth proudly achieved a long-held goal of hers, to attain a Bachelor of Arts degree in the mid-seventies. She did so as a part-time student, by taking summer courses for many years at the University of Western, then by taking a year long Leave of Absence from her teaching position. Bussie was a dedicated and keen learner, working hard to earn her BA while employed full-time at East Elgin Secondary School.
Bussie loved her family; grandparents, parents, siblings, nephews and nieces, and believed herself to be particularly blessed to grow up as she did and where she did, on the Thompson family farm just north of Aylmer. There she developed a love for animals of all kinds but especially of birds. That interest and knowledge was shared and fostered with her nieces and nephews. Her skill at mimicking bird calls was most impressive. Bussie's hobbies also included drawing, knitting, reading and gardening. Back in the early sixties Bussie knitted wonderful coat sweaters for our whole family, with animals featured on them and I still have mine.
When it came to birthdays, Valentines Day, Easter and other special events she didn't miss a beat. Her dedication to sending greetings to her family and friends was second to none! She was a great letter writer too and we began exchanging letters when I was a very young girl. Her many letters to me throughout my life, which only just ceased within the past year, were beautifully written in her remarkably steady and flowery penmanship, being one of the subjects she taught at high school for a time. Bussie was also very reliable with regular phone calls to us and loved to talk, at length, to her nieces especially. There was always a wealth of beautifully wrapped Christmas gifts under our tree from Bus-Bus. Her generosity extended even to loaning us money.
Marion Ruth had a special interest in and talent for lexicology. Her skill at the use of proper English grammar amazed me; not only did she speak and write very well but she could explain in detail the rules behind correct grammar usage. Many of us were nicely coached to improve our language skills thanks to Bussie. " Lay, Lie, Lain", blah, blah, blah. If only it all had sunk in!
Religion was most important to Marion Ruth and she derived much pleasure from her Bible readings and visits from her Anglican minister. One of my treasured possessions is a lovely white leather Bible Bussie gave to me upon my Confirmation. She was proud of and grateful for her life as she led it and of her upbringing too. Bussie was a very family oriented person.
It would be easy to regale you with loads of MRT anecodotes that would surely make you smile. Aunt Bussie was truly one-of-a-kind, with a memorable and loud laugh to match her sense of fun and high spirits. She made me feel important, even special, and was a big personality and influence on me. I loved Bussie and will miss her very much as she was such a strong, loving and constant presence in my life.
Margie LouThompson
or Marlie-Hoo-Hoo as Bussie would refer to me!

The first time I met Ruth was when I began high school, she worked in the office at the time and always was helpful and pleasant to a poor grade inner. I am glad I had a chance to repay her kindness doing the museum programs at Chartwell. Marion was one of our group and always displayed an active interest in whatever subject I presented. Her attendance will be missed. Ed, please accept my condolences over the loss of your sister. Pat ( Forbes) Zimmer

It is sad to realize all the years that have passed and we are left with memories only. I met Marion Ruth when I was employed as a secretary at East Elgin Secondary School in the mid-60s as she was too in a more senior position. She was always encouraging and patient with instruction as I learned my job and it was not surprising that in a very short time she worked diligently to officially qualify as a teacher - something she had always wanted. Much later we became familiar with so many in her family and enjoyed friendships with them. David and I send our affection and sympathy to you, Ed, and hope you have many happy memories to treasure.
