Obituary of Vaughan Poots
Dr. Alexander Vaughan Poots
After a long and remarkable life, we announce with heavy hearts, the death of our father Dr. Alexander Vaughan Poots on November 4th, 1 week after his 96th birthday. Vaughan was pre-deceased by his beloved wife June (nee Eglinton) his parents Samuel and Clara Poots, brother Dr. S.J. Poots and sister Vera Anderson. Loving father of Rowan (Kim, Renee, Jessica, Randie, Keith), Stephanie (John, Jennie, Leah), and Mandy (George, Aidan, Kieran). He is also survived by his sister Mona Young.
Born in Belfast Northern Ireland on October 29th, 1918, he spent time in Broughshane and then received his medical degree from Trinity College in Dublin. Upon graduating, he moved to London England where he was part of the Emergency Medical Service during WW II. Here, he met June Eglinton and they were married in 1949. They lived in Bideford in Devon and then Beccles in Suffolk, before making the decision to emigrate to Canada in 1957. After a brief time in Windsor they moved to Aylmer where they built their life and raised their family.
Vaughan cared for patients and families in his medical practice with kindness, compassion, skill and genuine caring while June managed the house and family. Despite his long hours of work, he remained a meaningful presence in our lives. In 1994 Vaughan retired after practicing medicine for more than 50 years. After the passing of June he learned many new skills, and took great joy in his garden, his dogs, as well as his family and grandchildren.
He spent a few happy years living in Riverbend in London and then spent the last years in Longworth Retirement Home remaining independent and gracious until the end. He is especially and very fondly remembered by extended family in Toronto, Great Britain, New Zealand, and the U.S.
Deepest thanks to Dr. David Graham and Dr. Cathy Faulds for their thoughtful care and support and their respective caring staff. We also wish to extend our sincere gratitude to the care provided by Longworth Retirement Home, VON Palliative Care, and the Palliative Care Unit at Parkwood Hospital.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Alzheimers Society toward research into Lewy Body Dementia or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
