We are very saddened at the passing of Joe. We grew to know and love Joe and Flossie at Terrace Lodge. They would always say something to give us a chuckle. Our thoughts are with his family during this very difficult time.

Joe & Flossie were my Mom & Dad's best friends. I have known them for as long as I've been alive. If it was not for Joe, my parents wouldn't even have known about their farm at Mossley. Since I have related that story about their friendship in the "Light a Memorial Candle" section, I will not repeat it here. But I would just like to reiterate that Joe was the absolutely BEST friend and neighbour that anyone could ever ask for. He was a very hard-working man, generous with his time and labour, with a heart that was bigger than he was, and he'd give you the proverbial shirt off his back if he thought you needed it. A better friend and neighbour could not be found anywhere. He changed the course of my parents' lives for the better, and thus mine, too, and he will always be remembered with much love.
My Dad's name was Colin, and people who knew him well sometimes used to call him "Colie" affectionately. I was always amused by Joe's version of this nickname for my father. He was the only person who ever called him "Cohwie," - his own personal version of this nickname for my Dad. I can hear Joe's voice at this very moment in my head - "Cohwie" - and it makes me both smile, and cry, at the warm remembrance of it.
The most wonderful dog that our family was ever blessed with to share our lives, a beautiful German Shepherd and collie cross, whom we named Tippy, was given to us as a puppy by Joe and Flossie. His Mom was their dog, I believe her name was Patsy. And what a wonderful gift he turned out to be! Tippy was really a human being in a dog's body, and he WAS a much loved and cherished member of our family. We have many, many wonderful memories of a beautiful sentient being who graced our lives for 11 years, thanks to Joe and Flossie.
Many years ago when Wayne and I were still living in Tillsonburg, Joe was gored very badly by a bull. My parents told me that he was busted up so badly that they thought he might never be able to walk again. I was horrified to hear this news and immediately went to see him in the hospital. I will never forget his reaction when he saw me coming through the door of his room. He was just busted up SO badly, and he looked so small and fragile lying there in his bed, and I was trying so hard to keep from crying at the sight of him, so I tried to make light of the seriousness of his condition by saying to him half-jokingly, "Good God, Joe, what're ya' tryin' to do these days? Bull-wrestle?" I could see he was fighting back the tears, and trying hard not to show his emotions, so in an attempt to cover them up, he grabbed my hand and shook it fiercely as if in mock defense, laughing loudly, and all the while saying, "Oh yeah, I know, I'll bet you think you've got me now right where you want me." I was kinda stunned by the comment - what a thing to say - but I could see the tears in his eyes and I knew he was glad to see me and was grateful for the visit, but was determined to put a brave face on a very serious situation indeed. And there it was - that feisty, scrappy little spirit - the same spirit that had gotten him through 3 years of hell in the Second World War - and the self same spirit that willed him to walk again against all odds to the contrary. I went to visit him when he had cancer, fearing he was finished then, (I think he was 82 or 83 at the time), and another time when he had a heart attack, and I marveled at his resiliency, good humour and toughness. Joe was not a big man in stature, but by God, he was as tough as they come! I loved Joe, and I am going to miss him and that indomitable spirit. Rest in peace, Joe, for you've certainly earned it, and God bless. Love, Lynda

Dear Flossie, Ruth & Margaret, and George & Don, So many wonderful memories of Joe and your entire family are swirling through my mind right now, I don't hardly know where to begin. I have known all of you since the day I was born. I will leave my stories for other sections of this website. Just know that my thoughts are with all of you right now, and having lost Dad almost 8 years ago now, I know exactly how you feel. I loved Joe very much. He was just the absolutely BEST friend and neighbour anyone could ever have asked for. He certainly changed the course of my parents' lives for the better, and thus mine too, and he will be remembered with much love always. Please accept Wayne's and my condolences for your loss. Love, Lynda

Joe & Flossie were my Mom & Dad's best friends. If it was not for Joe, my parents wouldn't even have known about their farm at Mossley. Joe was driving truck for Mr. Boyse at the time when it became available for rent, and he immediately told my Dad about it. The farm Mom & Dad were then renting was being sold right out from under them without notice, and Dad had 40 milking cows and no place to put them. Mr. Boyse changed his mind, and he decided he wanted to sell the farm rather than rent it, and so Mom & Dad bought it in the fall of 1955, but would not be taking possession of it and moving into it until the following March of 1955. Joe brought his tractor and plow and helped my Dad do all the fall plowing that needed to be done and planting of winter wheat. Joe Carrel was the best neighbour and friend anyone could ever have had. As long as I've known anyone, I've known Joe & Flossie, and Ruth & Margaret, and George & Don - literally since the day I was born. I have so many happy childhood memories of visits to Joe & Flossie's, playing with Ruth & Margaret and George & Don, and then the wonderful, delicious late evening lunches Flossie used to prepare for such a crew - 11 people in all. I visited Joe each time I heard he was in the hospital, whether it was for the time he was gored by a bull, or heart problems, or whatever, I always went to see him. I used to stop in for a visit on occasion both in their home in Springfield and at Terrace Lodge. I loved Joe very much - he was an absolutely wonderful family friend - and I am deeply saddened by his passing. Having lost my own Dad on April 13, 2006, I know exactly how Ruth & Margaret and George & Don are feeling right now, and my heart goes out to them. I send my warmest regards to all of them, and Flossie, too.
