I am truly saddened to bid farewell to Derek. Derek was a man that was larger than life. When he entered a room he brought with him life and energy. He had an interest in people that was genuine and sincere. He could tell you where everyone was and what was happening in their lives because he truly cared about them and their circumstances. He was generous to a fault. He will be greatly missed by not only his family, which he loved dearly but by all that knew him. I count myself blessed to have known him and be among his many friends.

I met Derek while working with Combined Insurance in Toronto back in the 70's and knew right away he was a guy with passion and a strong will to get the job done. He always had your back and would give the shirt off his back to help a stranger. We reconnected many years later in St Thomas after a Christmas parade and he eventually joined our little group, the Midlanders Alumni Corps and spent some time with us as our Drum Major in Parades. I think it is fair to say he was a Midlander through and through. On behalf of the Midlanders I want to express our deep sorrow at Derek's passing yet our joy in the knowledge that we will indeed meet again. john
