I only knew Al in his capacity as a missionary educator in Donetsk, Ukraine, but that still gives me some insight into the type of person he was. He taught at the International Reformed Seminary of Donetsk and was appreciated by everyone associated with the seminary. After Al taught there for the first time, I was contacted and asked if we would send him over again. Of course we were more than pleased to pass their request along to Al. He was easy to get along with and easy going and that made my working with him pleasant. We appreciate him as a person and a professor and miss him and his talents. Merle Messer

Dear Alice, It has been many, many years since the time we spent together at RBC, laughing together and crying together in our South Hall residence on the old campus. That was a huge year in your life, I remember, the most significant part of which was falling in love with Al and starting to plan your life together. I stumbled across an announcement about his passing in an email from my sister, who attends Covenant Reformed Church in Toronto, a sister URC congregation. I'm grateful for the 25 years you had together, serving the Lord and each other, and no doubt raising kids with a heart for service as well. I just want to express my deepest condolences, and pray for strength for you and your family in these very hard days. I wish there was some way to reach out over the miles and the years to give you a hug. May God bless you and bring your comfort. with love, and fond remembrances, Helena

Our deepest and sincere condolences to Alice, the children, all loved-ones of our deceased brother and the congregation of Aylmer. It is so unreal. Al was such a sincere, down-to-earth, loyal, likeable, self-effacing gentleman. A true servant of Christ. To stand in his place on the pulpit of Aylmer last Sunday was incredibly sad and solemn experience. And yet it was above all also very sacred, because God was speaking to us all: "The time is short... and the present form of this world is passing away". May our Sovereign God and Risen Saviour comfort all who mourn.

May the Lord continue to bless you and your wife and your family in His service. A.K." God strengthen you, dear family.

To Al's family, It was my privilege to be Al's teaching partner in Ukraine in early May of 2012. I so much enjoyed his fellowship, and the partnership we had as we instructed the students at the RITE Seminary in Donetsk. Just this morning I officiated at a funeral of an elderly member of our church -- and preached on the beautiful truths revealed in Psalm 23. May God use these and other Words of Life to give you all comfort and peace.
