Hello everyone,
I'm very honoured to have been asked to say a few words on behalf of all the grandchildren and great grandchildren today, and have attempted to put together a small collection of memories and themes that stood out for us that I'd like to share with you as we remember our Papa and Super-Papa as he was know to his great grandchildren. Thank you all for being here today to share in this celebration of his life. The evening that Papa passed away I happened to be sitting on the beach just north of San Diego after finishing a training course I was sent to for work, and I witnessed one of the most epic sunsets I have every seen, spread out over the pacific ocean. After a solid and very public cry, which attracted some attention from my fellow beach goers, and a lot of reflection, I found myself filled with a profound sense of appreciation for life, for my family, and for the chance to live long full lives and experience so much in them. In his 97 years, Papa lived an amazing, full life that touched all of us in different ways and will have a lasting impact on who we are as people and our picture of marriage and family. I'd like to share and celebrate some of these moments, in no particular order, that made an impact on me and the rest of Papa's grandchildren and great grandchildren ... I remember Papa as a strong willed, confident man who lived life on his own terms. I think this was evident right until his last days, when he decided to return to his home at Norview instead of staying in the Hospital during that last week. He lived life with a grace and class that few people can claim to have, aging gracefully, being pleasant and content, always curtious and well mannered. As my wife Kara has often remarked, "a gentlemen". As he got older, and we all got older, we grew to know a more gentle, sentimental side of Papa that we hadn't known when we were younger. Papa had a mischievous side too, he loved a bit of good natured teasing, that often caused those around him to laugh and endeared people to him. The way he purposefully made mistakes with peoples names, regularly calling Kara "Karla", teasing the staff at Norview, responding with "I'm getting older" when you'd ask him how he was doing. He was a man who had a twinkle in his eye, had an infectious laugh, and loved getting a rise out of people.
He loved cars, loved driving them, and loved keeping them in top condition. This could very well be one of the strongest Oliver traits that we've all inherited from him. I know my boys Truman and Rushford have this gene for sure. His love of driving extended beyond just cars … to include golf carts which he often let his grandchildren drive, and eventually his red scooter which he would drive his great grandchildren around on. Tracy and Gord's daughter Bailey has fond memories of her Super-Papa and his hot red scooter that she got to drive around on with her sister Maddie riding in the front basket. We remember his strict observance of "Happy Hour" and the great visits that would spark around drinks and snacks in the family room and sunroom at their home in Blenheim. This tradition was one that I know we're all happy to carry on with and observe in his honour. The hospitality and warmth that Papa extended to his family was something we all remember strongly, and the talks about our lives, goals, , politics
He was proud of his home, and kept it in top shape. I have such strong memories of Papa in Blenheim, whistling in the kitchen, breakfast gatherings with him manning the toaster at the breakfast table (occasionally burning the bread and telling us that the crusts will help us whistle and put hair on our chests), sitting out on the porch reading a paper, looking out towards Rondeau provincial park, totally in his element.
We have all been struck by Papa's love for our Nana. He was always concerned about her and taking care of her in different ways. I marvel at their life together, and look at their marriage as an example of what marriage is truly meant to be; two people supporting each other through good and bad, working through all the challenges that life throws your way and growing old together. We remember his love for the game of golf. We all have memories of days on the Blenheim golf course, caddying and later playing with him. I'll remember him as a sportsman, someone who loved listening to the bluejays on the radio while camping, watching golf religiously, curling, and supporting his grandchildren in their pursuits with everything from horses to mountain bikes. Seeing both Super Nana and Super Papa with their great grandchildren was an especially fond memory for those of us with children of our own. More than a couple of "4 generations of Oliver's" photos have been taken over the years, and I think its especially meaningful that he got a chance to meet so many of our kids a different times in his later years.
Lastly, I believe Papa was genuinely interested in our lives and what we were accomplishing as adults. He would regularly ask about our jobs, our successes, our challenges, and never failed to say how proud he was of what we had accomplished. That simple expression of interest and pride is one of the things that made the biggest impact on me, and something that I've tried to carry on with my own kids. Of the variety of things that Papa was known to forget as he got a bit older, this one simple thing never faltered. Thank you for sharing these memories with us today, and celebrating our Papa's life and it's impact on us. We all cherish the time we spent with him, and are so happy that he's back with our Nana again! Thank you.

When I think of Uncle Les, the words dapper & handsome immediately come to mind, with his lovely dark skin and white suits! And then I recall his kindness & love for Gladdy by cooking dinner for her while she painted works of art. Les was always easy to talk to, quick to laugh. I shall miss him but I believe he experienced a very rich life, & leaves many wonderful memories for his family and friends.

Happy hour in the sunroom, corn on the cob, breakfast around the dining room table, reading the paper every morning and calling out the stories and supermarket deals, walks at Peeley Point with Nana and Papa...most of my memories of Papa come from my adult years when I returned to Ontario for university. Once a month I would drive from London to Blenheim to visit, Nana and Papa both waiting at the front door for me. Over those visits I saw the softer, loving side of my dear Papa - one that I didn't necessarily see when I was younger. My strongest memory of Papa will be how much he loved his "Glad". I hope one day to have such love in my life. I love you Papa, and I will miss you, but I am happy that you are now re-united with Nana.

It is hard to believe that the "Old Guard" from Aylmer Baptist Church are almost all gone now!! Remember all the great that we had as families ( Doan,Ward,Oliver,Pirie ) I guess you could call us the "Original DWOP's". Great memories of working at the Orchard and still enjoying the "old kitchen table and glider" still in constant use at the cottage. Miss all of our lost senior generation!!

It is a bit sad that in today's fast world, it takes the passing of a loved one to prompt me to look back at photos and remember. I gazed at photos of Papa and Nana, with and without me, at my parents, and at my own children, and I marvelled at how much, and yet how little we have changed. I think back on the times I spent with Papa as a young child, and I remember the wry sense of humour. That same humour was there when Lisa and I first went east to meet the family, and it was evident in the most recent pictures of Papa I have seen. That Papa loved Nana, and the rest of his family, was always evident to me. While he was sometimes quick to tease (and who among us isn't?), and had a wit quicker than many, he was equally quick to make us know he cared.
I remember Sunday afternoons watching golf on TC with him, chatting during commercials and then falling quiet so as not to disturb Niklas' shot. And I remember 'caddying' (though my advice was of questionable value) around the golf course in Blenheim. I may not yet understand what he saw in the game, what with the level of frustration it sometimes gave him, and always gives me, but I do understand the values of patience and persistence it taught me.
I also remember Papa's love for keeping his cars nice and clean. In fact, I seem to have inherited. The gleaming blue Caprice (with the white roof) is etched in my memory. I'd rather forget the Aerostars, though, clean or not.
Papa didn't often come across to the younger me as particularly emotional or sentimental, but I had a glimpse into how emotional he could be when I took him to the Aerospace Museum in Ottawa in 1989. When he saw the old planes, he started to reminisce about his days in the military, and showed me a tender side that I didn't remember ever seeing before. In the years after that, I watched for that sentimentality more carefully and found it. Papa had perfected the gruff outside over the tender inside, an act that has served me well over the years myself.
Most of all, though, I remember breakfast with Papa. Not just the slurping coffee and offers of toast from the little cart in the corner, but the conversation over the morning paper, and taking time together over that most important meal of the day. Those latter two are things I strive to replicate with my own kids, particularly on weekends, when we have time to eat, push our chairs back, and talk about what was going on in the world. And talk we did. If we talked politics, I put on my best socialist NDP orange, and talked of the evils of the PC party, and Papa moved as far to the right as he could without falling off. I'm sure each of us only believed a fraction of what we said, but we had fun arguing, and solving Canada's problems at the breakfast table. At the end, we could agree to disagree, and everything was good. I never did tell him, either, that I took his PC arguments and used them assuming the far right position when I talked politics with my mom's father. I think both of them thought I was a loony as a result.
I'll miss my Papa, and I'm sorry my kid won't have a chance to know their Great Papa. We all take comfort, though, in the knowledge that he is back with his greatest love, and that he can be with her forever now.

When Kelly and I visited Ontario on our own in about 1987, we stayed with Nana and Papa, and had a fabulous time. One night we ate a TV dinner downstairs, and we had the most delicious Ontario corn-on-the-cob. It was so good! When I cleared the plates, I grabbed Papa's balled-up napkin to toss in the garbage, and felt something hard in it. To my absolute horror and surprise, I discovered......TEETH!!!! After the initial shock, I started to giggle, and so did everyone else - it's one of my favourite and clearest memories from that trip. There's nothing better than a good laugh with people you love. Thanks for the memories Papa!
