Christine, and Chris and family, I was so saddened to hear of Dan passing and I am sending hugs from Ottawa. Dan will always hold a big and special place in my sons’ and my heart. He was truly inspirational and was a poster child for a positive attitude! I remember visiting him in the hospital not long after the accident all those years ago, and I had bought him a videogame to play - and quickly realized this was going to be a challenge and I felt foolish. He just laughed it off and asked to watch me play it and I will never forget his strength and positivity at that moment - characteristics that Dan will always be remembered for. I will miss that huge smile, the shoulder shrug and that kind spirit. Sending love, Clare Cattrysse

After our family moved from the area , i met Dan and his Dad later working at the Tobacco Auction Exchange. plus working with Dan's brother Chris for a few years and was able to keep in contact over time. One would not miss that radiant smile Dan carried and upon greeting you!! Chris & family may all the memories ease you through this difficult time,,, My condolences, and heartfelt thoughts & prayers +... Ron Niville & family

I had the honour and privilege of playing alongside Dan during our Aylmer minor hockey and EESS football and soccer “glory days”. Dan was always one of our team captains, perhaps because he was the fastest and strongest but more likely because he worked so hard, played through pain/injury and always maintained a “team first” attitude that inspired so many of us to never give up regardless of the adversity we inevitably would face in life. By all accounts, Dan’s life lessons learned on the sports field transferred into every area of life off the field as well. Long before there would be Forrest Gump’s “Lieutenant Dan” we loved and respected our “Captain Dan.” Our hearts go out to Dan’s dear family and countless friends who are most impacted by losing Dan so young. Thanks for simply being ‘you’, Dan.
With sincere condolences,
Love The Epple family

Danny was a coaches' delight. His incessant smile and air of positivity were trademarks that he carried on the field of play and later when he faced life's challenges.
One example comes clearly to mind. Friday was always a big day during football season[ especially for players and coaches]
We were ready for the game, but Danny and Dad, Phil, had been at Tillsonburg Hospital getting a playing cast on a cracked wrist., and were not at EESS until almost half time. In true Danny style he appeared just before half, fully dressed in football equipment, announcing, coach I'm ready when you need me....smiling and as positive as ever. We decided, after feeling a hint of moisture on that cast, to wait until start of second half, for Danny's first play. In true Danny competitive style he ran that first touch from mid field for a TD[ we won O-E that year!!}
Two months ago I had the pleasure of seeing Danny at an EESS bb playoff game. He came rolling into the gym with that same incessant smile and air of positivity !
R I P Danny. You will never be forgotten !

Dan was a wonderful supporter of our Robarts Research Institute Spinal Cord Injury Team. We were four scientists (Lynne Weaver, Greg Dekaban, Arthur Brown and Paula Foster) whose research was dedicated to finding an ‘emergency treatment’ to be given as soon as possible after a spinal cord injury. We discovered a treatment that might greatly improve the quality of life for people who suffer a spinal cord injury. We are working toward this goal to this day. We met Dan in 2002 when one of our Robarts Development staff, Susan Robillard, introduced him to us. We developed a wonderful relationship with him and learned much from him that helped us understand where we should direct our research efforts.
A major focus in the first years with Dan was the London Annihilators, the wheelchair rugby team that was competing so successfully. Dan introduced us to the rugby team and to his future wife Christine. Lynne and her husband Canio watched some of their practices in awe about the challenges these athletes met. Dan offered himself to us as a fund raiser for our research and he and the Annihilators participated in many fund-raising events and activities including news programs on television. The events always focused on wheels. They came to a trotting race at the Western Fair Racetrack, where we solicited funds from the horse owners and the Annihilators bravely got their wheels into the sandy track with the horses and their sulkies. At one memorable event, the Rick Hansen Wheels in Motion fundraiser for spinal cord injury research, Dan offered to bring his ‘antique wheels’ to display as he was a car lover. When he said he would bring an antique car, we envisioned something from the 1930s but he arrived in a vehicle very much like the ones that one of us had known well as a teenager. His version of antique and hers (Lynne) were a few decades apart. But it was a great car and he loved it!
Dan was warm, generous, courageous and a truly special person. His smile would melt an iceberg and his humour was infectious. We stayed in touch for many years after his rugby days and it was always a joy to spend time with him. His passing is a great loss and we were deeply saddened to learn of it. Below are a few photos from our time with Dan.

Christine, Chris, Evangeline, Cousin Dave and family:
In my life, Dan was not only a dedicated, talented Eagle but also a former player who was a friend and an inspiration. He shone because in the face of overwhelming challenges, he was both a realist and an optimist, an unrelenting participant and a noble stalwart.
I will miss his warm greetings and his heart-warming smiles but I will have lasting memories of battle fought and goals scored.

Dan Cattrysse was the cause of much frustration for me when I first met him. I was coaching football at Arthur Voaden in 1984 and this fast and furious running back was the source of much frustration for our defence. His grit, determination and sheer athleticism made him the enemy that we tried to contain, but usually could not. His legacy and my respect for him began. And his selflessness and courage continued long after it began on the gridiron.
Fast forward 13 years and we met again, this time as congenial neighbours. Life had changed a lot for Dan and yet he lived life with the same grit, determination and athleticism that I respected him for all those years ago. And he added a whole array of other adjectives to his resume...if you knew him, you already know which ones you would use. Above all, Danny was positive. Despite life’s challenges, he knew that he had a loving wife, family and friends. One of my great memories of him was playing Bocce Ball with one of his special nieces, Ella. He no longer was a foe. I am blessed to have made a friend in Dan Cattrysse and so very lucky to have crossed paths with him again.
My heartfelt condolences go out to Christine, his family and all whose lives were touched by a really nice guy. Keep digging those clouds away with your backhoe in the sky, Dan, and let your sunshine radiate upon us all forever. Neighbour Dave
