An email was sent to me tonight in Victoria BC telling me of the passing of Skip Prokop.
I met Skip in Toronto in 1965. I being 17 years old and playing guitar and singing for a few bands in Yorkville. The Paupers were looking for a new singer and guitarist. Skip and myself hit it off as I rehearsed for The Paupers at the El Patio for over a month and met with his mom and family as he did with mine. I was having no luck with his bass player at the time in working with him so I left to move on in my carreer with music in Canada & the USA. What a wonderful drummer I met as I recall the month I new him. we never spoke again even though we played in the collisiam in Ottawa in different bands with over 10,000 people. I being an Elder in The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints know I will meet him again. In that as he sang about sunny day's. I testify we all are children of God Our Eternal Father and each of us have eternal souls. I expect to carry on that friendship we had for a brief time together in a band that I never stayed with called The Paupers. To be a friend of Skip Prokop in that day Some Sunny Day. RIP my friend... My sincere condolences to the entire Prokop family and Skip's extended Lighthouse Family. After listening to Lighthouse since their very beginning, I was honored to have Skip, his wide and son visit with us in the early 1980's at our house in Lakefield, Ontario. It was a pleasure getting to know Skip while fishing out in the boat, golfing and eating dinners while looking out at the beautiful countryside.
Skip was a gentleman and truly cared about others, I could see that. I was so glad he shared the personal struggles he went through while the band was touring during those busy years. You could tell he was a true family man.
His music will stay with me (and many, many others) for the rest of our lives.
Love,
Henry and Karen Hann

To Tracey, Jamie and the entire family;
My deepest condolences, the news of Skip's passing brings me much sadness, I never knew Skip as musician, though I knew of his many music accomplishments, I knew Skip as a wonderful human being, he was generous, kind, funny but a above all a very caring human being. He shared sound advice and helped me on several occasions, I will remember those great golf outings and Elm Hurst lunches full of laughter, it was my honor to call Skip my friend, the world has lost a true gift.

Skip was someone I knew and had the pleasure of giving him his own show - A Rock And A Hard Place at CFNY-FM. The show was an extension of himself. Peaceful. Honest. Genuine and Professional.
And then there is Lighthouse. Skip and the group didn't have to imagine playing Carnegie Hall.
To those in Skip's family left behind - please hang on to the great memories. They get even better with time. david marsden

I have listened to Lighthouse since the 70's. I used to live in the Hamilton-Burlington area and I remembered one evening meeting Skip personally as my friend and I were staying at the same hotel in Burlington. It was the Ribfest and Lighthouse was playing. He even dedicated the song 'Pretty Lady' to me and I was in awe. I saw him perform again at the Town Hall in Aylmer probably about 5 yrs. ago. That was last time I saw him. So sad to hear about his passing. He had a great voice and great band. My condolences go out to his family in this difficult time.

It was 34 years ago that Lighthouse performed on a television show I was producing. During that brief production period Skip and Bobby began to tell me about how much Jesus loves me. After that show I began to hang out with them quite often. It wasn't too long before I woke up to the fact that being a producer wasn't the be all and end all. Yes I accepted Jesus as my Lord and saviour and I remember how excited and happy both Skip and Bobby were when I told them. A lot of water flowed under the bridge we had built over the years. From just hanging out to concerts and studio sessions. Skip was unique to be sure. He was never hesitant to share his feelings; especially for his family. But personally I got to know him in depth when I was his 'wing man' on the radio show 'Rock & a Hard Place' each Sunday night in Brampton. We became more than friends. We were brothers. And while life took us our separate ways we would always be able to pick up just where we left of at our last get together or telephone chat. Thank you Skip; my brother for all the times together but mostly for being faithful and instrumental in leading me to know Jesus. I would be remiss in not doing the same so I encourage each reader of this to stop right now.... ask Jesus to forgive you of your mistakes and sins and ask Jesus to come into your heart... doing this will help continue the legacy of Skip and I guarantee you will then 'see' him again and share an eternity of 'Sunny Days' with Jesus. On Wed Aug 30th I was re-connecting with "cousins" Muriel, Donna & Deb Stewart. We were reminiscing about our early years which included the Prokop family. Too many fond memories to mention here. My parents shared a duplex Auntie Jan & Uncle Harry at 56 Cathcart St in Hamilton in the very early years. I shared a playpen with "Ronnie's sister Darlene. There was also mention of our many years spent together at our cottage on Long Point where I'm sure Ron got his love of fishing with Uncles Jack & Bill. Of course as years went on we all went our separate ways but wonderful memories have stayed with me. My last in person connect with Ron was at my then home on Lake Nipissing where he was enjoying some down time with his son Jamie. Thinking of your family at this time with fondness and sympathy in my heart.

I grew up with Skip. As a mediocre guitarist I envied Skip’s reputation as the prima donna accordionist for the Waddington School of Music in Hamilton. We lost touch until a fortuitist Chirstmas Eve when we reconnected at my Aunt and Uncles. I discovered that Skip had become an aspiring drummer and we ended up performing at various coffee houses in Guelph where I attended University. While I was attending the U of T we performed with several pickup bands and he was adamant that we should commit to music full time. Not having his talent nor dedication I pursued a conventional professional life as Skip formed the Paupers, a band that in my opinion did not garner the recognition they deserved. While we shared the occasional phone call, to my regret we never did reconnect. Skip was an amazing talent. He provoked the CRTC to acknowledge that CANADA does have talent and should support our native musical stars. Skip went on to create one of the most dynamic and creative rock ensembles that this country has ever produced. He was a truly gifted performer and has left a wonderful musical legacy. We miss him dearly and are grateful for the footprint he has left on the Canadian musical stage. I extend my deepest sympathy to his family for their loss. I miss him too and regret that we did not reconnect in later life.

Wanting to add to, I presume, the many expressions of condolences to Ron's Family and friends. We knew (as we then called him) Ronnie as youngsters on East 5th Street, Hamilton. Our Moms and Dads were friends and neighbours, so we spent a lot of time together. Watching his career and being lucky enough with cousins to attend some of his performances (with pictured Tshirts!) made us very proud of our long time friend. His humility and his sense of self never changed over the years, and his kindness, in the loss of our parents, stays in my memory, as does his music. R.I.P. my friend.

I met Ron on a plane from Edinburgh to Toronto about a year ago. He told me he had been in a band called the Paupers way back when and that he had met a lot of rock stars. I had never heard of the Paupers so we talked about the Shetland Islands, little ponies, fish, oil, family and the environment for about 4 hours. He never once mentioned "Lighthouse". When I got home I told my kids that I met a rock star named Ron Prokop and they googled him. Imagine my surprise when I found out that he really was a rock star- "Sunny Days" was our anthem in 1976. Ron was a very genuine, friendly and humble man; I thoroughly enjoyed the brief time we spent on the plane. I still remember the story he told me about a guitarist in Toronto who tested the range on a remote microphone by walking out the door and disappearing for a few days. It says a lot about a man when his memory makes you smile.

I wanted to express my heartfelt condolences to all of Skip's family. For right now, there's no detour around grief, no shortcut through mourning. However, 2 Cor.4:7 says that God can give us, "... power beyond what is normal ", to go from one day to the next. This does not mean that we no longer cry, or that we forget. It means we recover. We recover because of our hope. Jesus Christ talked about our hope in John 5:28 which says, "... all those in the memorial tomb will hear his voice and come out ". Jesus was referring to the resurrection. That is our amazing hope! The Bible likens our hope to an anchor. Just like an anchor stabilizes a ship, our hope stabilizes us and keeps us from drowning in overwhelming sadness. 2 Cor.1:3 describes our Creator as, "... the God of all comfort ". One way that God comforts us is by moving people who care about us to give us words of encouragement that we need to hear. May the God of comfort be your comfort now, during this time of sorrow. For the Bible's answers to life's big questions please visit JW.org.
