Dear Gardner, LeeAnn, David and Families Noel and I were so shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of Barb. She looms large in my childhood memories as our friendly, generous neighbour. As a teenager I remember typing up some of her assignments as she embarked on her university studies, and later following many of her remarkable achievements. Barb was a wonderful woman who firmly believed in giving back to her community. She will be missed. Our thoughts are with you and we hope your many special memories give you strength. With deepest sympathy Cheryl and Noel Van Raes

To the McKenna family, I first crossed tracks with Barb in the fall of 1973. She was my tutor in the weekly tutorial in History 25, a Canadian history course, at Western in 1973-1974. It was a pleasure to get to know her and to see her kind face every Wed. morning, me a wet behind the ears freshman. We knew she had to drive in from Aylmer often in the huge amounts of snow we had in the 1970s in London. I still recall the weeks we were studying responsible government. It seemed every week she would ask me to define that concept! I then ended up writing an essay on it! The 2nd and last time I met Barb was in 1980, in my first year here in Ottawa as a staff member of the National Library of Canada. We both walked on to the same elevator and I received that kind smile of recognition from her. I still work for Library and Archives Canada, its successor, so Barb in her way helped further an interest I already had in Canadian history. I believe my sister who was finishing up her final year of a BA in history in 1973 may have been the first in the family to know Barb. I too have roots in Elgin County, for my mother grew up in Sparta and finished her last 2 years of high school at Aylmer High School, graduating from there in 1937. It's a small world. Much sympathy to you, with gratitude for the life of Barbara. It was a pleasure to read something of her deep faith and service to others. Sincerely, David Farris Ottawa

Such sadness to realize that Barb has left us. She was a wonderful friend to our mother and mother-in-law Mary McConnell for so many years and maintained that friendship and care through the final days of her life - often travelling quite some distance to do so. Our many memories of her include the journey she made here to Windsor providing comfort at the end of our brother Jack's battle with cancer and reach much further back to when she was a tutor for David as a young schoolboy. Her intellect and her accomplishments were considerable but they were secondary to the lovely generous spirit and presence that she brought to all of us she leaves behind. Our deepest sympathy goes to her family as they presently mourn and hopes that they will soon rediscover comfort in their memories.

What a great loss to the Christian community and especially to her family to whom she was unwavering in her love. To all of us who knew her, she possessed a great heart and spirit, and matched her aspirations with her actions. She elevated the conversation in any room, from petty things, to great thoughts and hopes for the welfare of others. A bright light has been extinguished. It was truly a privilege to walk with her in the journey of faith, in the years I was pastor in Aylmer. Our condolences are extended to the family. Angela and Das Sydney
