When my husband and I first came to this area before 1970 we met Giles Hume and were invited to his farm. He seemed the fountain of knowledge about all things agricultural. Reading the newspapers I have followed his contributions to our community. His kindness has been shown through his volunteer work for many organizations. He has done so much for East Elgin.

As we mourn the loss of Giles, I hope his family and friends find comfort in the memories that are held in the hearts of so many people. I was one of hundreds of youth who benefit from Giles' guidance and support (through the Elgin County 4H Dairy Club). His quiet demeanour and wonderful sense of humour will always be treasured. Giles was a truly philanthropic individual - giving to the causes he believed in financially and with his time. His greatest lesson: get involved in your community. Thank you, Giles. Your life made a tremendous impact.

“Gillies Hum” … as our Mom used to call him after one of his infamous skits at the Lions Hall .. and to this day that's how I think of you. Giles knew where to go to obtain the correct “props” for those skit …our Mom’s closet! I know there are pictures out there of Giles and other dedicated Lions members dressed to the nines in her dresses. Oh what fun they had. Giles I will remember you for many, many things especially your dedication and commitment to this community through 4-H, Scouts, Lions Club, Aylmer Fair and Fun Day. One time sticks out in my mind at the Last Community Night held in the old Springfield Lions Community Hall in 2010 before it was demolished. Along with a few other Citizen of the Year recipients, the committee asked you to speak to the attendees. You reminisced about our Mom and all the years you helped serve at catering on weekends with the Lions Club. You said when Mary Pearson called you to help at the hall you hated to say no because it was like saying no to royalty. Well Giles, you were the King ... of Volunteering in our community and through your life’s passion you helped groom many future generations . Our community was blessed when your family settled here. RIP Gillies

It was with the very best of intentions that i wished to visit with Giles. But sadly, as life does, other more urgent (at the moment) trivialities, superceded that wish. Giles was indeed a most generous and kind man. His legacy with the Aylmer Fair will live on for many years and will his interest in all things 4 H and farming. Giles was a truly great, and gentle, man and it was a priviledge to call him a friend.

Heartfelt condolences to Giles' family and friends; he was positive role model of community service to others in so many ways. I believe it was Giles who took over the office of my late grandfather Milton Charlton when he retired from North & South Dorchester Mutual Insurance as an agent. The office was located in a small building adjacent to my grandparents home on Main St in Springfield next to Vincent's Esso station. Over the years every time I have driven past the Hume farm including just last month, I remember when Giles hosted the International Plowing Match. It was a special time for Springfield and I remember the school children being given a half day off school to attend the match. The fields were a mass of tents, booths, and parked cars in addition to the areas where the plowing competitions were being held; it had a real carnival feel and just a patchwork of colours, sights and sounds. Thanks for your service Giles and thanks for being your quiet but still vibrant member of the community. You will long be remembered and missed. Rest in peace.

I have known Giles most of my life and have had the honour of having him as a 4H Leader, co-Leader, fellow Fair Board Member and as a friend. So many of us who have grown and learned under his quiet leadership and teaching have lost one of our personal greats in our lives. Our world is a poorer place today. God bless you Giles May you rest in the peace you have so rightly earned
