Obituary of Donald Scott
Scott, Donald of Aylmer passed away at St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital on Thursday, June 2, 2016. Born on a farm near Limerick, Saskatchewan, he was one of five children. After World War II, his family moved to London, Ontario, where he completed high school (South Secondary School). He earned an Honours Bachelor of Science in Zoology in 1952 at the University of Western Ontario, and Masters degree in Zoology in 1953 at the University of Western Ontario. Dr. Scott began his career as a freshwater Biologist researching commercial fish species at Western University's lab at Erieau, near Rondeau Provincial Park. He worked with the Federal Department of Fisheries in Winnipeg and Great Slave Lake for three years, as well as one summer with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources at a research station in Wheatley on Lake Erie. After working as a research scientist for several years, Dr. Scott returned to school to study Denistry at the University of Toronto. Since Dr. Scott enjoyed small town life, he decided to set up his dental practice in Aylmer, upon graduation in 1960. He worked six days a week until 1999 and was always available for hospital duty and emergency care. His patients frequently commented on his reassuring manner, his gentleness and his willingness to carefully explain procedures. Dr. Scott was an active participant in community organizations, serving in various capacities over the years. He was a member of St.Paul's United Church since 1963, and had been a member of the board and recording steward several times. Dr. Scott joined the Aylmer Rotary Club in 1962, and had over 50 years of perfect attendance. He had been club treasurer and a member of the Easter Seals Committee for over 25 years. He was also a Paul Harris Fellow.
Dr. Scott brought the Cancer Society to Aylmer in the 1960s and was instrumental in establishing a branch in East Elgin. The Town of Aylmer was fortunate to have Dr. Scott as a role model. He was a kind-hearted, sympathetic person who was genuinely concerned for the welfare of others. At the same time he was a very private person who had been consistently willing to help others without any expectation of public recognition or personal gain. He was a patient reliable person with a subtle sense of humour. Most of all he was a man of integrity who lived by his ideals. You may not have seen Dr. Scott's name in print very often but he was always there doing an effective job in a quiet way. He deserves recognition as one of Aylmer's very dedicated volunteers and outstanding citizens. Beloved husband of Marion (Charlton) Scott . Dear father of Allene Scott.
