Growing up on the pheasant farm, Len was a permanent fixture. l have a lot of great Len stories to share, but the one I'd like to share here is how Len taught me a lot about hard work, being generous to others, patience and being proud of what you accomplish.
Not only was Len a hard worker, but he taught me the importance of doing a job right the first time. He had lots of tips over the years and some of them have never left me..."The easiest way to find something is to put it back where it belongs in the first place!"(Has anyone seen Len's ringers?)
Taking pride in whatever you are doing, even if it's not a fun job...and on a farm where there can be a list of not so fun jobs, this was a great outlook to have! And his classic line was "there's no sense in complaining, no one's really listening anyway" followed by his goofy chortle to encourage you to laugh at his joke too!
Len saw a lot of summer staff at the farm come and go over the years and he put up with a lot of characters, while being one himself!
He was generous to those around him and was always quick to help out whenever needed. He was often surrounded by a group of kids who were always looking for a way out of doing something and Len would often just let us get away with it!
I can remember washing eggs as a kid with Len and coming across a very "muddy" egg that needed a good scrub. My sis, bro and I thought we were so sneaky when we would pick the egg up and keep it under the water and then slip it into Len's hand, so he'd clean it. As if Len didn't know! Of course he knew, he just let us get away with it (most of the time) and teased us when he did catch us. I realize this may seem like a bizarre example, but Len was so patient, kind hearted and caring. Almost to a fault.
So thanks Len...for all that you've taught me. You will always be a part of our family.
Love,
Kate

When I was about 15 years old I started working with Lenard on Strieb's pheasant farm. I did that for several summers while I was in high school. I remember Lenard as a very kind person with lots of patience for a guy who did not know which end of hammer to hold. Lenard was quick to smile and had a pleasant laugh and laughed often. Rest in peace my friend and I know you are in a better place.
