I have many vivid impressions from my earliest childhood of the impossibly big man who I came to know as Bill Fehr. He was the constant, warm, friendly presence at the old Oak and Elm Missionary Church. He was the man who invited people to join the happy gang that visited McDonald's on Sunday evenings (after church service ended of course). He was the friendly giant who taught the youngest in the congregation how to give a proper handshake after Sunday morning service. The lineup for his handshakes would start queuing almost as soon as the final hymn finished. His secret for teaching the perfect handshake? No real secret... a candy concealed in the palm ready to transfer. His lineup seemed to include a large number of adults who also wanted refreshers in handshaking technique. We can only speculate as to his annual outlay for sweets.
His sweetness went far beyond the candies he gave out. His love of Christ and his goodness and decency shone through him and drew others to Christ. His words of personal testimony which I was blessed to hear on occasion were backed up by the integrity of his life and the love that he showed others.
